Chepai bu: the beloved son
Chepai Bu, winner of nine national awards in the first national film festival and competition, explores a subject that all Bhutanese can easily identify with, especially the older generation: the conflict between tradition and modernity, as issue of concern for the Bhutanese society today.
The film was widely appreciated and ran to packed houses wherever it was screened.
The original screenplay of Chepai Bu was written by Tshering Gyeltshen, a self-trained screenwriter and actor, and the film was directed by Karma Tshering, among the few Bhutanese to be trained as a professional filmmaker at the time.
The film won nine awards in the first national film festival and competition in December 2001.
Besides winning the awards for the best film, it also won in the categories of best actor, actress, direction, editing, dialogue delivery, playback singing and lyrics.
Chepai Bu, the first major production of PEKHANG Audio Visuals, set a quality benchmark for the emerging local film industry.
